Advance your growth and development by signing-up to the PSC, a programme of workshops designed to build your employability skills.

With many internships and work experience opportunities having been cancelled due to the pandemic, there’s no doubt that the last couple of years have been stressful and challenging. Many students are concerned that they don’t have enough relevant work experience to apply for jobs.

Leading employers tell us that they recognise and understand why students are worried, but emphasise that it’s vital to think out of the box and consider:

  • ‘what else have you done to self-learn and enhance your skillset’?
  • how have you used your initiative to develop yourself in the absence of the types of quality work experiences employers usually look for?

The good news is that the Professional Skills Curriculum (PSC) can help you build the skills needed for the modern professional workplace.

Sign-up for the PSC and enhance your CV!

The Professional Skills Curriculum (PSC) programme of workshops and lectures can help you gain many of the professional, transferable skills which are highly valued by graduate employers, including communication, time management, leadership and many more.  These skills will look great on your CV and may help you stand out from the crowd!

Open to all undergraduates, PGRs and PGTs, the PSC has 30+ sessions in semester 2 which will help improve your skills across the board.  These include:

  • PSC+ Sustainability skillsets – learn more about sustainability and how to enact it through your personal, academic and professional life.
  • PSC+ Organisational Psychology – working on learning and development, managing change, workplace wellbeing
  • PSC+ Teaching – ever thought about using your degree to become a teacher, find out more about primary vs secondary and the diversity and inclusion in teaching.

Visit the PSC workshops page for full details of all workshops.

Sessions will be delivered by professionals and students, all of whom have extensive real-world experience in the topic of their workshop and will be able to give you the best possible advice.

Make the most of the graduate attributes platform

Log your activities on the graduate attributes platform to reveal your skills profile and increase your employability.

Reflecting on your activities inside and outside of the classroom this semester will allow you to build up your personal skills profile which will enhance your employability and benefit you whenever you need to apply for an internship or job.

Take some time to familiarise yourself with the graduate attributes and how the graduate attribute platform works and log everything you’ve done – assignments you’ve completed; tutorials you’ve contributed to; lab work you’ve completed; student roles you’ve taken on; sports, society and hall activities you’ve been part of; volunteering you’ve done, and more. It all counts towards developing your graduate skill set that sets you apart.

Positive PSC feedback

Many previous PSC participants highly recommend the workshops and lectures. Some reflections include:

‘the course is outstanding, very useful… really engaging and informative.’

‘it gave me skills to better organize myself… I was able to recognise how listening may impact on communication and impressions it can leave on others. I therefore look forward to applying several learn skills.’

‘the PSC+ Investment Banking and PSC+ Consultancy strands provided a useful insight to a career in the finance industry, what the work environment and structure is like. Good tips on improving cv and applying for internships.’

‘I found the PSC – Making Podcasts workshop very (useful) to have someone with hands on experience talking to us about podcast writing and production.’
