Lauren: My career journey to the House of Commons
In this post, Lauren shares how support from the Careers Centre—through mock interviews and tailored advice—helped her secure a competitive internship and graduate role.
Third year reality check: time to get career-ready
When I first arrived at university, I remember hearing about the Careers Centre and thinking, “I’ll definitely use them before I start applying for jobs.” Then, like many students, I got caught up in coursework, social life, and part-time jobs—and completely forgot about it. It wasn’t until my third year, knee-deep in internship applications, that I finally returned to that long-forgotten idea.
30 applications, 1 interview
During the summer application season, I submitted over thirty applications. Most disappeared into the void with no reply. Finally, I heard back from one: the Civil Service Summer Internship Programme. I was nervous. The role specifically mentioned a preference for STEM students—and I was doing an English degree. I wasn’t sure I stood a chance. But here’s the surprise: this was the one internship I got. It was a powerful reminder that meeting 100% of the criteria isn’t always necessary—you just have to apply.
Preparing for my first real interview
This was my first proper interview and it was a phone interview, which I’d never done before. I knew I needed support, so I finally reached out to the Careers Centre. I booked a mock interview session, explained the role, and asked for it to be held online with cameras off (to mirror the real experience). That’s when I met Ricky (Careers Adviser), who led the session. He was incredibly kind, supportive and reassuring, which immediately eased my nerves. We practiced typical interview questions, he introduced me to the STAR technique, and helped me fine-tune my answers. He even coached me on what questions to ask at the end of the interview.
From practice to placement
When the real interview came, I was ready. Thanks to Ricky’s help and support, I felt calm, focused, and confident. Some of the questions were even the same as those we’d practiced. A few weeks later, I got the call: I had been accepted. That summer, I worked at the Ministry of Defence, Navy Headquarters—a role I would never have landed without that preparation and encouragement.
Building on success: applying to the Fast Stream
The success of my internship gave me the confidence to aim higher. In my fourth year, I applied to the Civil Service Fast Stream. This time, I faced a four-hour assessment centre—a completely new experience for me. Once again, I turned to the Careers Centre for support.
I spoke with Lisa-Rose (Careers Adviser), who was incredibly helpful. She talked me through what to expect, addressed my worries, and worked through practice questions with me. That preparation paid off. I was later invited to interview for the Houses of Parliament Graduate Scheme—and I’m thrilled to say I’ll be joining the House of Commons in September.
Advice to other students: use the support of the Careers Centre
Applying for jobs and internships can feel overwhelming. It’s time-consuming, emotionally draining, and filled with uncertainty. But one thing I’ve learned? You don’t have to do it alone. The Careers Centre was there when I needed someone in my corner. Their advice, encouragement, and expertise helped me unlock opportunities I didn’t think were possible.
Apply for the roles that excite you—even if you’re unsure you meet every requirement. And don’t hesitate to reach out to the Careers Centre for help! Sometimes, it just takes one opportunity to get your foot in the door.
Lauren’s story is a great example of what’s possible with the right support. From mock interviews to application advice, we helped her build the confidence and skills to succeed.
