PhD student Hayley McLennan was awarded the Employability Bursary in February 2024.  Read her story.

Hayley used the fund to help her undertake the RYA Level 2 Powerboat Handling Course with Tayside Powerboats.

Unlocking opportunities on the Tay Estuary

I received £329 from the Employability Bursary. I used this funding to undertake the RYA Level 2 Powerboat Handling Course with Tayside Powerboats. Over two intensive days, I immersed myself in both theory and practical learning on the Tay Estuary, covering essential topics like navigation, nautical equipment, voyage planning, and even man overboard drills.

From novices to confident navigators

Despite the chilly February weather, we enjoyed every moment of motoring around the Tay Estuary. For my peers, it was their first experience driving a powerboat, but under the expert guidance of our instructor, they quickly became adept at handling the vessel. We navigated landmarks like the bridge, Larick Light, and Tayport Harbour, gaining invaluable hands-on experience.

A certification with global reach

Having previously obtained a boat handling qualification through the British Sub Aqua Club, I knew the importance of having a widely recognised certification. The RYA Level 2 is a prestigious credential that opens doors to further certifications, such as the International Certificate of Competency (ICC). This means we can now rent and drive boats worldwide, a significant advantage for marine biologists like us who spend a lot of time on the water.

A career-boosting edge

This certification is more than just a qualification; it’s a game-changer for our future careers. It positions us strongly for postdoctoral roles with fieldwork components, naturalist, or field guide positions, and even industry roles post-PhD. The skills and qualifications we’ve gained demonstrate our proactiveness and commitment to acquiring the necessary tools for our careers, helping us stand out in a crowded job market.

A Call to Action: your turn to shine

We had such a great experience that we’re now eager to keep our skills sharp and get out on the water as often as possible. And this could be you! I strongly encourage every student to apply for the Employability Bursary. Whether it’s for a course, certification, or any other initiative that can boost your CV, this bursary is a fantastic opportunity to invest in your future.

Don’t let the cost deter you from pursuing valuable certifications and experiences. Apply for the Career Centre Employability Bursary and take control of your career today!
