The Careers Centre is excited to offer week-long, paid internship opportunities within professional service units of the University of St Andrews to postgraduate taught students.

The Spring Internship Programme internships will take place during Spring Break, from Monday 21 February to Friday 25 February 2022, with interns paid a stipend of £345.

What is the Spring Internship Scheme?

The Spring Internship Scheme offers financial support to pursue a valuable learning and employability experience within an organisational working environment.  We have nine professional service units across the University of St Andrews offering 12 different opportunities.  There is huge variety, providing some exciting opportunities to not only make a difference with your contribution but to gain valuable work experience and employability skills.

The internship will last for one week during Spring Break, from Monday 21 February to Friday 25 February 2022. Most placements will run from 9am to 5pm, but some offer flexible hours. Each placement opportunity is based within the professional service unit, and you will have a host and get to know the team.  We hope some opportunities will be in person, but remote or hybrid working will be accommodated where required.

Who is eligible?

The Spring Internship Scheme is open to registered postgraduate taught students at the University of St Andrews.

Each eligible applicant can apply for up to two internships within the scheme but may accept only one.

What is the purpose of the Spring Internship Scheme?

The purpose of the Spring Internship Scheme is to increase your future employability through the experiences you will gain.  We hope you will enjoy working on a real-life project, helping a professional service unit to benefit from the array of skills, knowledge and creativity our diverse and talented taught postgraduates bring. We also hope the experience of applying and being interviewed will enhance your knowledge of the recruitment process and the importance of it.

Through reflection on the experience and from feedback received, we encourage all successful applicants to write a journal or document their learning from the opportunity.  This will provide a useful source of information to refer back to as you continue your employability journey.

What can I expect from the Spring Internship Scheme?

You will be given a formal induction at the beginning of your internship. This will include an introduction to the overall function of the unit in which you will be working.

You will then be assigned a real-life project to work on, and be expected to perform useful tasks within the unit. This is designed to replicate the challenges of working in a graduate-level job and will help you gain insight into the knowledge and skills needed to succeed in your preferred area of work.  During your internship, you will also be provided with comprehensive feedback on your performance.  Some internships may require you to produce a report at the end of the week.

How and when do I apply?

All Spring Internship Scheme opportunities, along with application details and requirements, are listed on Career Connect, the Careers Centre’s online opportunities portal.

Applications close on Friday 14 January 2022. Interviews will be held between Monday 31 January and Wednesday 9 February 2022, with places confirmed by Friday 11 February.

Where do I go if I need support with my application?

For support with your application, see our how to apply for a job or internship pages. You may also find it helpful to book an appointment with a careers adviser to discuss your application.

The Spring Internship Scheme is a pilot project which we will review and learn from in order to shape future schemes.  If you have any ideas for how we can further support St Andrews postgraduates in their employability journey, please email us at [email protected]. We would love to hear from you.
