Black Careers Matter

If you are looking for employers committed to racial and ethnic inclusion, the Careers Centre can help you get started.

All employers in the the UK (excluding Northern Ireland) must follow the Equality Act (2010) during their recruitment processes and while they employ their staff. However, some employers go further than this, and show a specific commitment to racial or ethnic inclusion. If you are interested in working with companies and organisations that have this commitment, this post will show you how to get started.

Vercida

Vercida is a website that spotlights employers with a focus on inclusion. This includes racial inclusion, as well as a wide variety of other protected characteristics, including age, gender, sexual orientation, and disability. Vercida allows you to view a database of employers, and learn more about the company in which you are interested, including its statement of values and the roles they are currently advertising.

Importantly, you can also view information on the ‘inclusive features’ of the organisation, which can give you an impression of how, and to what extent, the business is genuinely concerned about inclusivity. Vercida also lets you view related articles about the organisation, where those who have worked for it share their thoughts on its workplace culture and how their own experience matched the organisation’s claims to be inclusive.

Additional resources

Diversity Link

This is a similar resource to Vercida, but emphasises both finding jobs with inclusive employers and finding jobs that include a focus on inclusivity. When used alongside Vercida, Diversity Link can be a useful way of enhancing your search for a diversity-friendly employer. In addition, consider looking at Diversity Link’s news section for the latest news from the diversity and equality industry.

Inclusive Companies

This is a membership body of organisations showing real commitment to diversity and inclusion, and can be a useful way of targeting employers during your job search. In particular, consider the Inclusive Top 50 UK Employers, that promote inclusion across all protected characteristics, or have shown that they are eager to become more inclusive. This may help narrow your search for employers, especially given the range that claim to be diversity-friendly.

BYP Network

This is a professional network targeted especially at black professionals, including students and graduates. BYP includes a broad job search for graduate-level jobs, as well as a regularly-updated, in-depth blog discussing black employability.

Further support

In addition to consulting these resources, you may want to discuss diversity-related issues, including racial and ethnic inclusion especially, in a one-to-one setting. To do this, please book an appointment with a careers adviser, who will be happy to talk through these issues with you.
