Whether you are a UK or international student, the Careers Centre can support you if you are looking to work outside the UK after you graduate.

Students from St Andrews decide to work outside the UK for a variety of reasons. Many international students want to return to their home country after they graduate, and seeking work there is their next natural step. For both international and UK students, the sector they may like to work in, such as international affairs or academia, could require a period of work outside the UK. In the case of UK students, they may simply be curious about what work abroad might look like.

Regardless of the reasons and your background, the Careers Centre can support you in pursuing a global career.

What do I need to think about?

The Careers Centre’s jobs outside the UK page contains information about some of the things you should consider when thinking about working abroad. This includes visa and language requirements, as well as what the application processes are and what the country’s labour market is like. Additionally, for those looking to work in the United States or China, on this page we have compiled detailed recruitment timelines for various employment sectors in these countries, to help you plan you job search.

To help you think through these issues, you could visit websites like TARGETjobs and Prospects, which contain detailed guidance on working abroad. Likewise, GradLink is a resource aimed at international students studying in the UK, with parts of the website dedicated to students from specific parts of the world who wish to return to their home country for graduate-level employment. GradLink offers careers advice, case studies, sector information by country, as well as vacancies.

GoinGlobal

In addition, you should consider using GoinGlobal. GoinGlobal provides comprehensive advice and guidance, written by local experts, on working in over 45 countries and cities, all over the world.  A stick man running with a briefcase, in front of a globe

Information is provided on local CV and cover letter practice, the main places for finding jobs, the country’s interview expectations, salary information, general cultural advice, and much more. If you are considering a career outside the UK – or even within it – you should give GoinGlobal a go.

Both students and graduates can access GoinGlobal through our jobs outside the UK page.

Where can I find vacancies?

Finding vacancies abroad can sometimes be a challenge, especially as the key job sites may not align with those of the UK. To help with this, the jobs outside the UK page curates sources of vacancies for the main countries of interest for St Andrews students seeking global careers, including China, the European Union, India and the United States.

Additionally, both GradLink and GoinGlobal, mentioned above, can be useful sources of vacancies, with GoinGlobal letting you search for vacancies in both English and the country’s local language.

Events

The Careers Centre hosts a variety of events throughout the academic year, as well as during the summer vacation. These include panels with employers and alumni from across the globe, who can advise you on how to find and pursue opportunities in the part of the world in which you’re interested.

To see what events are coming up, take a look at our events page. In addition, you can watch previous events that have been recorded on the Careers Centre’s Stream.

What if I need more help?

Hopefully the above resources have given you a useful insight into how to start to pursue a global career. But if you would like further support, you can book an appointment with a careers adviser to talk through any of these issues on a one-to-one basis.
