Nadiyah Khan shares her experiences of participating in the Your Future, Start Now Internship Programme.

My story – Nadiyah Khan

  • Course: BSc Medicine
  • Year of study when you completed this internship: First year
  • Employer: Robertson Group, Dundee

Why did you sign up for Your Future, Start Now?

I saw it as a program that would help to build entrepreneurial skills which are key in the current climate. As the world of work continues to evolve, it is very important to be a well-rounded person so you can move along with it. Entrepreneurship allows you to work in any field with any type of degree. Therefore, to ensure that I would have the best start when I graduated, I decided to join this course.

How did you find the 5-week workshop programme?

Overall it was a rewarding course. I made sure to participate in the group talks and was very fascinated to listen to the guest speakers and their journeys to where they are now. I think the program wasn’t too taxing and didn’t infringe upon my study time, so I was able to balance the course and my workload very well.

Tell us a little about your internship

I worked with the Robertson Group, a construction company, in Dundee. I had a very enjoyable time. The people there were very friendly, and I was lucky to have someone else there as well so we could share the experience.

The week went by very fast, and I really enjoyed how the days were planned. I visited 3 different construction sites at different levels of completion, and it highlighted to me how the construction industry never ends. I was also able to see the vast number of roles that were offered and how anyone from any background could get into construction.

What skills did you learn and how did you put them into practice during the internship?

I improved upon my communication skills by talking to a wide range of people in different roles. I also improved on my active listening skills and my confidence to ask questions when I didn’t understand a concept.

What’s next for you in your career journey?

I would like to start taking on more positions of responsibility around the University, such as joining a club, taking on a sponsorship, or taking on a leadership role.

What would you say to someone considering signing up for Your Future, Start Now?

I would definitely encourage anyone to apply to the YFSN programme! It is a great opportunity to explore a field which you might not have explored before or to delve more deeply into a chosen career path.
