Employability Bursary: Maggie Seward
Maggie used the Employability Bursary to gain an insight into the work of librarians and historic preservation with the US National Park Service at Yosemite National Park.
What did you use the Employability Bursary for?
Internship with the Libraries and Archives branch with the US National Park Service at Yosemite National Park.
How did you find out about this opportunity?
I reached out to the librarian of the park via email.
Why did you choose this opportunity, and how does it support your future goals?
Because it combined my academic and professional interests as a history student with a keen interest in historical preservation with my love for the outdoors and the national parks!
What did you gain from the experience, and how has it helped your employability?
I gained so much from the experience in terms both of technical experience in library/archival science and understandings of how to navigate professional relationships within a large organisation. I enjoyed the experience immensely and have so many friends and memories having undertook the position. It gave me an incredible appreciation for and deeper insight into the work of librarians and historic preservation and given me a clearer idea of what my postgraduate ambitions are. Beyond technical skills, the opportunity also helped me improve broader traits such as my adaptability, independance, problem solving and communication. It was my dream experience and a once in a lifetime opportunity that would not have been possible without the help of the bursary and the Careers Centre.
What advice would you give to other students thinking of applying for the Employability Bursary?
Go for it! And if you are apprehensive about anything ask the Careers Centre who are so helpful and supportive.
