Recruitment Agencies explained: What every student should know
In this post, Lou Murphy, Careers Adviser, provides advice and guidance on how to use recruitment agencies to find a job.

As you step into the world of work, you might notice a growing number of companies using recruitment agencies to find talent. This shift is reshaping how job seekers (especially students and recent graduates) connect with opportunities. Recruitment agencies can also help you access the hidden job market.
What are recruitment agencies?
Recruitment agencies act as intermediaries between employers and job seekers. They’re hired by companies to find suitable candidates for specific roles sometimes temporary, sometimes project based fixed term and sometimes permanent.
How to find a good recruitment service
Not all agencies are created equal. When looking for one to work with, consider:
- Sector specialism: Some agencies focus on finance, tech, creative industries, or graduate roles. Choose one aligned with your interests.
- Reputation: Look for reviews or testimonials. Ask for recommendations.
- Transparency: A good agency will clearly explain the role, employer, and expectations.
- Quality marks: Look for membership of an external organisation. For example, the Recruitment and Employment Confederation whose members have passed a compliance assessment and adhere to a code of professional practice.
Why should you use a recruitment agency?
Building relationships with recruiters, attending industry events, and maintaining a strong LinkedIn profile can help you tap into the hidden job market. However, there isn’t just the standard permanent job opportunity, there’s also Temp-to-Perm which is a foot in the door of an organisation.
Some roles start as temporary contracts but can lead to permanent positions. These “temp-to-perm” roles are common in sectors like marketing, and project support.
If you’re placed in a temp role:
- Treat it like a long-term opportunity
- Show initiative and reliability
- Let the agency know you’re open to permanent work
Recruiters are more likely to put you forward for permanent roles if you’ve proven yourself in a temp position.
The reality: who is the customer?
Here’s a key truth: you are not the recruitment agency’s customer – their customer is the employer. That means:
- Their priority is filling the role to the client’s satisfaction
- They may not always advocate for your best interests
- Effectively, you are a resource they match to a client’s needs
That said, a good recruiter will still support you with CV tips, interview prep, and give honest feedback because your success reflects well on them.
Recruitment agency: red flags
While many agencies are professional and helpful, be cautious of the following:
- They ask you to pay: Legitimate recruitment agencies are paid by the employer, not the job seeker.
- Pressure tactics: If they push you to accept a role quickly without time to consider.
- Lack of communication: If they stop responding to you after initial contact, it may not be worth pursuing further.
- Lack of online or physical presence: If they operate only via LinkedIn or another job-seeking platform, do your due diligence and check for a presence outside the platform.
Final thoughts …
Recruitment agencies can be a powerful part of your job search strategy but they’re just one piece of the puzzle. Stay proactive, build your network, and don’t be afraid to ask questions. The more informed you are, the better you can navigate the evolving world of work.
